Identifying and recruiting subject matter experts (SMEs)

Tips for recruiting SMEs for IT exam development

Getting the word out

  • Look for potential SMEs among individuals who contribute to industry publications and blogs, and frequently share related information on online forums.
  • Send a recruitment email to your database of certified individuals.
  • If you have a designated online “community,” post the opportunity there.
  • Include information about the opportunity in your organizations’ e-newsletter or other communications vehicles.
  • Post information about the opportunity on your social media channels—encourage your colleagues to “share” with their networks. Remember that social media is all about timing—you may need to do this 3-4 times over several weeks to be effective.
  • Post the opportunity in other LinkedIn groups that are related to your exam topic or industry.
  • Send information about the opportunity to any industry associations of which you are a member. Ask them to share the info in their member newsletters or social media channels.
  • Leverage your training community by having them identify candidates who might be strong SMEs. Likewise, you may want to invite the trainers to participate themselves.
  • Consider outreach to academic instructors who teach courses related to your topic. (Contact the dept chair and ask them to share info with relevant faculty.)
  • Contact your other partners in the ecosystem (training curriculum partner, exam delivery partner, badging platform partner, etc.) and ask them to help promote the opportunity via their communications channels (newsletters, website, social media).
  • Post the exam development role as a freelance job opportunity on one or more of the following (different pricing models):

(Note: GitHub is not a good option as they are sunsetting their jobs board)
