Generating Items with AI Bulk Content Generation

AI Bulk Content Generation lets you fill out your item bank automatically, based on your blueprint's topics and target item counts, instead of writing every item by hand. This article walks through how to turn it on, what to prepare before you use it, and what to expect once you click "Generate Items."

💡 Every item this feature creates is clearly tagged as AI-generated, and nothing goes live until you've reviewed it. Think of this as a fast first draft of your item bank, not a replacement for your review process.

1. Before You Start: What Your Blueprint Needs

AI Bulk Content Generation runs against your blueprint's existing setup, so a few things need to be in place first:

  • Every topic in the blueprint needs a description. The AI uses these descriptions to know what each topic is actually asking for.
  • The blueprint can't contain subtopics. This feature currently only supports a flat topic structure (topics with no subtopics beneath them). If your blueprint uses subtopics, you won't be able to use this feature until you restructure it.
  • The blueprint must include the "Single Correct Response – Four Options" item type in its configuration. This is the only item format the feature currently supports.

⚠️ If any of these aren't in place, you'll see a message telling you exactly what's missing when you try to generate — see Section 3 below.

2. Turning the Feature On

AI Bulk Content Generation is controlled per blueprint, so it needs to be switched on before it's available.

  • Go to Admin > Blueprints.
  • Select the blueprint you want to generate items for.
  • Open the AI Configuration tab.
  • Switch on "Enable AI bulk content generation."

💡 New blueprints have this on by default. If you're working with a blueprint that existed before this feature launched, check this toggle first — it defaults to off for those.

❓ Who can turn this on? Org Admins and SuperAdmins. If you don't see this toggle, you may need to ask your Org Admin to enable it for you.

3. Starting Generation from Item Authoring

  • Navigate to Item Authoring for your blueprint.
  • Click "AI Bulk Generation."

This button is visible even if the toggle from Section 2 isn't on yet — clicking it in that case simply prompts you to go turn it on first.

Once clicked, the system checks your blueprint in order and stops at the first thing that needs your attention:

  • Feature not enabled: You'll be prompted to go to Blueprint Settings and turn on AI Bulk Generation (Section 2 above).
  • Topic descriptions missing: You'll see a list of which topics still need descriptions, with a link to go add them.
  • Subtopics present: You'll see a message that this blueprint can't use the feature in its current structure. There's no workaround here other than removing the subtopics.
  • Required item type missing: You'll be prompted to add "Single Correct Response – Four Options" to your blueprint's item type configuration.

If your blueprint passes all of these, a panel opens showing how many items are ready to be generated.

4. Reviewing Reference Content Before You Generate

The panel that opens shows one of two things, depending on whether your blueprint already has enough accepted items:

If your blueprint has already met its item target: you'll see a message confirming there's nothing left to generate. There's a shortcut here to jump straight to Item Management if you want to review what's already there.

If your blueprint has a shortfall: you'll see the number of items ready to be generated. This number is calculated automatically — it's your blueprint's target minus the items you've already accepted, so it isn't something you type in or adjust.

💡 Only items in Accepted status count toward your target. Items still in draft or in review don't count yet, so that number may be higher than you expect if you have items sitting in review.

Below that count, you'll see a table of the reference material already uploaded for this blueprint (the same content managed under Admin > Blueprints > AI Configuration), along with an "Upload Content" option to add more before generating.

⚠️ Only PDF files can be uploaded as reference content right now. If your source material is in another format, convert it to PDF first.

💡 The more reference material you provide, the more accurate the generated items are likely to be. If you're seeing a sparse reference list, it's worth adding source material before generating rather than after.

5. Generating Items

  • Once you're ready, click "Generate Items."
  • If any files you uploaded are still processing, you'll be asked whether to wait for them to finish or proceed without them.
  • You'll then see a confirmation before the job actually starts — confirm to kick it off.

Generation runs in the background, so you're free to keep working elsewhere in Certiverse while it processes. You'll get an in-app notification once it's done.

6. Reviewing What Was Generated

Once generation completes, head to Item Management for your blueprint. You'll find:

  • Your new items, added directly to the item bank and clearly tagged as Certiverse AI-generated so they're easy to tell apart from items your team wrote by hand.
  • A completion report showing how many items were generated per topic, and flagging anything that needs a closer look.

This is the point where your review comes in — nothing generated here is meant to go live untouched. Read through the completion report, check any flagged items, and approve, edit, or replace items as needed just as you would with any other item in your bank.

❓ Will AI-generated items be as good as ones written by an expert? Every generated item goes through automatic review and quality checks before it reaches you, and anything with a potential quality concern is flagged clearly rather than hidden. You still review the completion report and the items themselves before anything goes live — you stay in control of what makes it into your final exam.

❓ Do I have to use every item that gets generated? No. Generation fills your blueprint's gap and hands you a full set to review — you decide what stays, what gets edited, and what gets replaced.

❓ Can I generate items for just one topic instead of the whole blueprint? Not currently — generation runs across your entire blueprint at once, matched to your topic weights. Generating for a single topic in isolation isn't available yet.

❓ Can I choose exactly how many items get generated? No — the count is calculated automatically from your blueprint's shortfall (your target minus what you already have accepted). If your bank already meets your target, generation is blocked with an explanation rather than creating items you don't need.
