This article will guide you through common microphone issues and how to resolve them on different operating systems.

1. Refresh the page
Refreshing the page is the quickest way to fix microphone issues.
- If you have a Windows system, and you are using the SEB, this will be on the top left corner of the screen.
- If you have a Mac system, and you are using the SEB, this will be on the bottom right corner of the screen.
- If you are not using the SEB and are using Chrome, Safari, or Edge, please refresh the browser tab.
2. Look for External devices.
Double check that you don’t have any external devices (headphones, AirPods, Bluetooth earbuds, etc.) that could be interfering with the exam. Unplug and disconnect all types of headsets before proceeding with the exam.
3. Verify the Device Settings.
During the “Exam Pre-flight”, make sure that the microphone you are using is the one selected.
- Click on the Microphone dropdown menu to select the correct microphone you are using.
4. Check Permissions
- Make sure you are allowing all necessary permissions.
- With Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

- If you have a Windows system; Please, follow these instructions: Windows: Safe Exam Browser Permissions
- With Chrome/Safari
- Check for the Camera Icon on the top right corner of your URL bar, and click on “Allow.”
5. Reboot Your Device
As a final step, please try rebooting your device. A simple restart can often fix many software-related problems and refresh system settings.
