Job Task Analysis - Tasks - Guide
1. Purpose
Thank you for participating in this critical step of Job Task Analysis. You were chosen as a Subject Matter Expert for your deep knowledge of this job/role.
You will be writing task statements to describe what people in this role do “on the job.” This information will guide us in creating effective exam content based on what’s most important to measure.
There are 4 steps to participating in this Job Task Analysis:
- Understanding the job/role title and description
- Creating tasks
- Assigning a domain
- Submitting tasks
2. Understanding the Job/Role Title and Description
The first step in completing a Job Task Analysis is to understand the job, or role, title and its description. Understanding this information will help you create relevant tasks for this job or role.
3. Creating a Task
After reviewing the title and description, you can begin writing tasks. Tasks are activities performed by people who have that title or role. Write tasks clearly and in a specific way. All tasks should:
- start with a verb.
- contain a single concept (usually one verb and one object).
- be understandable by Subject Matter Experts from other organizations.
New Task: Select the ADD TASK button, enter your tasks in the field, and then select out of the field or choose ENTER.

Once a task is carefully written, you need to assign it one (or more) general labels, called domains. A domain is a broad knowledge or skill area that groups the tasks into logical parts of the job/role. Exam items will be organized into multiple domains, so there should eventually be several domains and several tasks in each domain.
Assign Domain: Select the ASSIGN OR CREATE DOMAIN button to assign a domain to your task. You can either (a) create a completely new domain or (b) select an existing domain. You can assign more than one if the task relates to multiple domains.

5. Submitting a Task
Select the SUBMIT button to complete your task. Your task is automatically saved in “Draft” status prior to submitting. You can edit any of your tasks by selecting it by name. (Note: you can keep your task marked as “active.”)
